Van Den Herik - Sen-sail-tional!

Local Darwin sailor, and current Queensland Academy of Sport athlete Paris Van Den Herik has kicked off Australia’s Pacific Games sailing campaign in style on Tuesday ending the opening day of racing in second place.

Van Den Herik is competing in not only her first multi-sport event, but first overseas meet as well in the crystal blue waters of Samoa. The 18-year-old had a terrific start to the competition on Tuesday, claiming a 2nd, 2nd and 4th place in the Women’s Laser Radial. With her main focus entering the regatta consistency, Paris has taken exception with her performance for the fact it has helped her to overcome one of her biggest challenges – her mindset. With exceptional sailing leading to two 2nd place finishes, her fourth place came even after a mistake was made at the end of the first lap, but one she was able to redeem and still finish the race strongly.

Weather permitting, the second day of racing will return to the Sheraton Resort on Wednesday.
