Tokyo-yo weekend for Hayward and Peris
It was an up and down weekend for former NTIS hockey scholarship holders Jeremy Hayward and Brooke Peris, with Hayward’s Kookaburras booking their place in the upcoming Tokyo Olympics, whilst Peris’ Hockeyroos missed out on the automatic qualification.
The Kookaburras were all business in their best of three series against New Zealand, to claim the 2019 Oceania Cup after convincingly taking out the best of three series with two wins and a draw. Despite blowing a two goal lead in the second match of the series, allowing New Zealand to come back and draw the match, the Kookaburras dominated the third match with a 3-0 victory. By claiming the Oceania Cup, the Kookaburras booked their Olympic ticket and can now begin preparation towards Tokyo next year.
Unfortunately for the Hockeyroos, a 1-1 draw in the final match against New Zealand wasn’t enough with the Kiwis able to claim the Oceania Cup, and force the women’s team the long way around in order to qualify for the Olympics. Despite taking an early lead 2 minutes into the match, New Zealand struck back in the second half and held on against a barnstorming Australian team, as they threw everyone forward in search of a winner.
The Hockeyroos will now be drawn against Italy, Chile, or Russia, in a two match series to be played on home soil in Perth on the weekend of 25-27 October. The winner on aggregate across the two match series will then qualify for Tokyo 2020.
