Peris and Hayward hit the scoreboard on inaugural FIH Pro League weekend

Brooke Peris and Jeremy Hayward were both able to find the back of the net during matches on the inaugural FIH Pro League Weekend, against some tough opposition for the Australian sides.

Hayward’s Kookaburras were unable to get a victory in either match, losing in a shootout to the Netherlands on Saturday after finishing a thrilling match 5-5 at the end of regulation time. Hayward was the only Australian to capitalise in the shootout scoring a goal, with the Netherlands ultimately triumphing 4-1. Sunday’s match up against the world number one Belgium was not as close, with the Australians unable to stop the superior Belgium outfit, going down 4-1.

The Hockeyroos had more success on the Saturday, ending a near decade long run of dominance by the Netherlands to win their first match in 19 attempts, with a 1-0 victory. The momentum, unfortunately, could not be maintained into the Sunday with a nail-biting finish resulting in Australia unable to get over Belgium losing 2-1. Brooke Peris did her best to bring Australia back into the contest, scoring in the dying minutes of the game with a powerful field goal.

Both teams will turn their attention to next weekend in Tasmania, with the Hockeryroos to take on China on Saturday, followed by a Sunday match up for both the Kookaburras and Hockeyroos against Germany.
