Champions and Runners Up, for Hayward and Peris
It was mixed results for former NTIS athletes Jeremy Hayward and Brooke Peris, with the Kookaburras and Hockeyroos finishing champions and runners up respectively, in the inaugural FIH Pro League tournament.
Hayward was part of the winning men’s outfit, who managed to hold off a fast finishing Belgium to be crowned champions, and the new number one ranked men’s hockey team in the world. All three of Australia’s goals were scored in the first half, but a determined Belgium ensured a thrilling finish scoring two goals in the second half requiring Australia to hold on for a narrow victory.
Peris’ Hockeyroos championship match wasn’t short on drama either, pushing the world number one Netherlands all the way to a penalty shootout. Unable to be separated at the end of regulation time at 2-2 despite a match largely dominated by the Netherlands, a tense shootout followed with the Netherlands managing to triumph Australia 4-3 on penalties, and claim the Pro League title for 2019.
