The history of the railway in the NT dates back over a century with a railway linking Adelaide and Darwin first proposed in the 19th century and continuing on through the 20th century.
Holdings at the Northern Territory Archives Service (NTAS) on the railways are mostly personal records consisting of oral histories, photos and personal papers.
For government records relating to the railway in the NT consult the National Archives of Australia (the Commonwealth was responsible for the administration of the Northern Territory from 1911 to 1978) and the South Australian Archives (South Australia was responsible for the administration of the Northern Territory from 1863 to 1910)
For more information see the NTAS list of holdings or List of Government and Community Records Relating to the Railways in the Northern Territory - oral histories are not included in this list.
Contact the NTAS for more information.
The following is a series listing according to the surname of the person who created or deposited the records with the NT Archives.
